Who I am & how I think

Hello, welcome, I’m Amy – nice to meet you. I live in Kalamazoo Michigan, and have for the past 13 years. Until about, oh … 4 years ago, I didn’t really consider it home – but now I, whole-heartedly, love this town. I love music, photography, cooking, reading, learning, thinking, writing, searching, exploring and breathing. Yoga and running are becoming priorities in my life.

I’m currently a student at Western Michigan University – graduating in April of 2013. I’m double majoring in Sociology and Organizational Communications. I have enjoyed a liberal arts education, taking classes in philosophy, political science, culinary tourism, and other cultures, on top of my degree requirements. I have a good mind for research and theory. I’d say that I’m a critical theorist – constantly adapting and changing – and also a competent communicator.

When I was younger, I wanted to go to medical school, but I feel that I have many passions in life, and to consume myself with one may not be the best idea. Not to mention, I agree with Eastern philosophies towards health and healing, so my place would be an unwelcomed one in the medical community.

I currently work for an herbal supplement company – a small one, based out of Kalamazoo, MI since 1987. I’ve been here for over two years and I love it! This has been able to bring together a few of my passions – helping people, healthy living, alternative health, and community involvement! I’m blessed, nonetheless!

I volunteer at the People’s Food Co-op of Kalamazoo and Fair Food Matters/HarvestFest. I’m passionate about eating healthy and living a life that allows you to be a happy person – we all have the ability to do so, we just make the choice of whether it is worth it or not, and I choose to be happy.

I want to change the world. But I also know that you can change the world by making ONE single person happy, in any little way, any day. So I strive to make at least one person smile in a day – and if I do – my dream lives on!

I believe in certain things, like loving your neighbor. And I mean this in a very general sense, but to break it down – if my neighbor has a better job, lives a healthier life, and had a more positive state of mind, he/she/they are better off, and then I’m better off. So if everyone thought that way, we’d all be better off.

As I’m in this constant growth period, called life, I’ve learned that there are a few things I have passion for – helping others, loving yourself, and learning as much as you can about anything you want. I believe in being an informed and engaged citizen. People, just a few hundred years ago, fought for our FREEDOM, and with respect, I play my part in making our society a better place.

I buy local, as often as I can. It is getting harder and harder, with online shopping, wholesale discounts, and limitations of what’s available – but I do my best. I try to buy organic, especially when it is organic and fair-trade. Support those around you, and that includes people in other countries and cultures, as well as other living species. I’m not a vegetarian, and if I could kill each animal I ate, I’d feel better about eating meat. Quality should ALWAYS win over quantity, no matter how hard it may seem to be. And most of all, if you can go to bed feeling happy about how you treated others around you, and yourself, be grateful and be compassionate for those who aren’t.

I’m blogging to share my healthy living experience, my ever-exploring fashion sense, my ridiculous stories, my “amazing” photography skills, and my epistemology towards life – ENJOY! Because I know I do :)

  1. I’ve just nominated you for a Liebster award. Please don’t feel pressured to respond. I do so to share what I admire with other people around me and hope that they also gain something from your little space on the web. Thank you for the inspiration that you provide me to stretch and challenge my blogging skills- Kumu
